Terms and Conditions

Last updated: 23 October 2026

These terms are the rules for using Tsela. By using Tsela, you agree to them. If a school has signed an order or agreement with Tsela, that agreement also applies, and it wins if the two ever disagree.

1. Who can use Tsela

  • Schools that have an agreement with Tsela.
  • Teachers, school admins and learners whose school has added them or approved them.
  • Anyone trying the free demo, which uses a fictional sample school.

Learners under 18 may only use Tsela through their school, and their school must have consent from a parent or guardian. See our Privacy Policy.

2. Accounts and passwords

  • Keep your password private and do not share your account.
  • Tell your school (or us, if you are a school admin) straight away if you think someone else has used your account.
  • School admins are responsible for who they add, and for removing people who leave the school.

3. Using Tsela fairly

You must not:

  • use Tsela to break your school's rules for tests, exams or assessments;
  • post anything harmful, illegal, abusive, hateful or sexual, or anything that bullies or threatens someone;
  • try to get into accounts or parts of Tsela you are not allowed to use, or try to break its security;
  • overload Tsela, or copy its content in bulk with automated tools;
  • upload files that you do not have the right to upload.

Teachers decide how much the tutor may help in their class. For example, they can switch the tutor to hints only, or lock it during a test.

4. The AI tutor

  • Tsela uses AI. AI can be wrong. Always check important things against your textbook and with your teacher.
  • Tsela is a study aid. It does not replace teachers, and it gives hints instead of doing learners' work for them.
  • We cannot promise any marks, test results or exam results.

5. Wellbeing alerts are not an emergency service

If a learner writes about self-harm, abuse or danger, Tsela shows the Childline number and alerts their teacher. This is not an emergency service, and nobody watches Tsela around the clock.

In an emergency: call the police on 10111, Childline on 116 (free), or go to the nearest hospital.

6. Material schools upload

  • A school may only upload textbooks, term plans, tests and other material that it has the right to use in this way, including under copyright law. The school is responsible for this.
  • Uploading does not change who owns the material: the school, or the publisher or author, keeps their rights. The school gives Tsela permission to store and use it only to provide Tsela to that school.
  • We do not share one school's uploaded books or materials with other schools.
  • If someone tells us that uploaded material breaks their rights, we may remove it and will let the school know.

7. Tsela's own content and software

The Tsela app, website, software, design and our own lessons and practice questions belong to Tsela. You may use them only to learn and teach through Tsela. The demo learners, teachers and school are fictional.

8. Fees and payment

  • Schools pay per learner per month, at the price in their order or agreement.
  • Building a school's uploaded textbooks, and reading its term plans and past tests, can carry a one-off setup charge. The estimated charge is shown before the work starts.
  • Unless agreed otherwise, we bill per school term, in advance.
  • Each plan includes a daily allowance of AI tutor use per learner. When a learner reaches it, the AI tutor, search, new notes and voice pause until the next day. Practice, saved notes and offline packs keep working.
  • If a payment is late, we will give the school written notice. If it is still not paid after the notice period, we may suspend the school's access until it is paid.

Cancellations and refunds are covered in our Refund Policy.

9. Keeping Tsela running

We aim to keep Tsela running, but it may sometimes be unavailable, for example for maintenance or because of problems with our service providers or the internet. We may improve or change features over time.

10. Suspending or ending access

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts others at risk or puts Tsela's security at risk. Where we reasonably can, we will tell the school first. A school can end its agreement as set out in its agreement and our Refund Policy.

11. Our responsibility to you

To the extent the law allows, Tsela's total responsibility for any claim is limited to the fees the school paid Tsela in the 12 months before the claim. We are not responsible for losses we could not reasonably have foreseen.

Nothing in these terms limits any responsibility that the law does not allow to be limited, or takes away any rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act or other law.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. We will give schools at least 30 days' notice of important changes, and show the new date at the top of this page.

13. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of South Africa. If there is a problem, please contact us first at To be added, and we will try to sort it out fairly and in good faith.
